Beginning 1899 and 1900 respectively, Butler-Butler, a small New York City manufacturer, introduced two new luxury American cigarettes brands named after famous London landmarks. These were Pall Mall and Piccadilly cigarettes made from expensive straight-Turkish tobaccos, and sold in small clam-shell boxes that reeked of sophistication. The Piccadilly cigarette was short-lived, but Pall Mall was destined for greatness. Five times more expensive than the common domestic brands made merely from Virginia tobacco, the Pall Mall was advertised with the slogan "A Shilling in London A Quarter Here." Butler-Butler have modernized Pall Mall in 1936 with a new tobacco blend and soft pack, king sized in 1939, and in 1940 they had "Wherever Particular People Congregate" added to the front of the pack. Nowadays Pall Mall are manufactured by British American Tobacco.
