Gitanes (Gypsies) was launched in 1910, the classic blue design of a dancer with her tambourine, dates from 1943. This is the most popular brand of French cigarettes currently owned by Altadis of Spain. The name Gitanes means "Spanish gypsy women", therefore, a silhouette of a gypsy woman with tambourine is presented as the box-art. Production in France recently halted, with one factory remaining operational in the Netherlands. This happenned because of the rise on tobacco levies imposed by the French government in the wake of health advice, which has levelled the price of French cigarettes up to the level of the American ones, with the more aggressively promoted brands such as Marlboro now taking the majority market share.
